Communicator is an item introduced in 60 Parsecs!.

In survival mode it's usually used for communicating with extraterrestrial life and and repairing the communication console, it's sometimes used as a weapon for creating loud/distorted noises.

It takes up 3 slots during scavenging.

When sent with a character on an expedition, characters will have a chance to communicate with the captain on what choices they should do during scavenging.
